The Position
Advances in AI, data, and computational sciences are transforming drug discovery and development. Roche’s Research and Early Development organisations at Genentech (gRED) and Pharma (pRED) have demonstrated how these technologies accelerate R&D, leveraging data and novel computational models to drive impact. Seamless data sharing and access to models across gRED and pRED are essential to maximising these opportunities. The new Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) is a strategic, unified group whose goal is to harness this transformative power of data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist our scientists in both pRED and gRED to deliver more innovative and transformative medicines for patients worldwide.
Within the CoE organisation, the Data and Digital Catalyst (DDC) organisation drives the modernisation of our computational and data ecosystems and integration of digital technologies across Research and Early Development to enable our stakeholders, power data-driven science and accelerate decision-making.
As the Team Lead for Engineering - AI Enablement, you will guide a team that is embedding artificial intelligence across our scientific landscape. This is a unique opportunity to shape our AI strategy, empower our scientists, and accelerate the discovery of transformative medicines for patients worldwide. You will be instrumental in building a cross-functional team that drives significant impact across our research and early development organizations.
The Opportunity
Lead a diverse team of machine learning engineers, software engineers, and data scientists to deliver state-of-the-art AI/ML tooling and solutions.
Drive AI-related initiatives, projects, and partnerships that shape the future of drug discovery and development.
Design, develop, and test robust, scalable, and maintainable AI/ML facing solutions including scientific web applications and backend systems.
Partner with product managers and scientists to understand user needs and translate them into actionable technical specifications.
Develop and maintain systems for collecting, structuring, and storing diverse scientific data to support advanced analytics and machine learning.
Build, deploy, and evolve AI/ML infrastructure and utilities, including MLOps and communication protocols.
Foster the growth and development of your team members, creating opportunities for them to expand their knowledge, capabilities, and skill sets.
Establish a strong and collaborative network with other leaders within the Computational Sciences Center of Excellence.
Who You Are
We are seeking a leader who is passionate about the potential of AI in science. To be successful in this role, you bring:
A Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a similar technical field, or equivalent experience, combined with 8+ years of professional experience in roles related to AI/ML or computational biology.
A minimum of 4 years of experience leading teams, including experience in forming a new team.
Experience working in drug discovery and/or development, with a background in cloud-native architectures (ideally AWS).
Expert knowledge of statistics and machine learning theory, with a proven understanding and application of engineering best practices.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trusted partnerships, influence, and motivate others towards common goals.
